Position Description:  Nursery (2 ½ & 3 Year Old Program) Teacher

 

Summary / Purpose:  Nursery teacher(s) will team teach developmental early childhood classes for 2 ½ year old and 3 year old students.  As faculty members, incumbent will design and implement quality programs that prepare students in a Christ centered environment.  Teachers will be involved in coordinating, furthering, equipping and encouraging preschool families in a comprehensive preschool ministry.

 

Employer / Supervisor’s Title:  Principal.  Position interacts with Parish Administrator, School Office personnel, Parish Life Minister and other parish staff as required.  Position falls under the authority of the Pastor.

 

Responsibilities and Tasks:

 

Have primary responsibility for planning and teaching in the nursery programs.  Implement developmentally appropriate activities and strategies which support student growth and readiness; plan and implement a play-based program that meets the individual developmental needs of each child in a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment.

 

Provide an environment of acceptance that supports and respects each child’s gender, culture, language, and ethnicity in the Catholic tradition.

 

Provide opportunities for parents to become involved in their child’s growth and development through parent education and participation.

 

Ensure the maintenance of updated records of the preschools operations and, appropriate attendance, medical, emergency and accident details.

 

Ensure that all Virginia Department of Social Services and other governmental regulations are followed.

 

Ensure compliance with all Diocesan standards and policies.

 

Performance Appraisal:

 

A set of Goals will be prepared yearly that align with the above responsibilities.  The supervisor will monitor the goals and report on progress to the incumbent of the position.

 

Working conditions:

 

This is a full time position.  Incumbent is expected to work and plan during the school day, attend faculty meetings, arrange meetings with parents as appropriate and generally participate in school activities as appropriate

 

Date of Position Description:  June, 2006.

 

This position is exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

Qualifications:

 

  1. Have an endorsement or bachelor’s degree in a child-related field such as, but not limited to, elementary education, nursing, or recreation, from a college or university;
  2. Have three months of programmatic experience and at least one of the following education backgrounds:
    1. A one year early childhood certificate from a college or university that consists of at least 30 semester hours;
    2. A child development credential by an organization listed in § 63.2- 1738 of the Code of Virginia;
    3. A teaching diploma from an internationally or nationally recognized Montessori organization; or
  3. Have six months of supervised programmatic experience.
    1. Within six months before being promoted or beginning work or one month after being promoted or beginning work, a minimum of 12 hours of training shall be received related to the care of children, including but not limited to:

                                                               i.      Child development;

                                                             ii.      Playground safety;

                                                           iii.      Health and safety issues; and

                                                           iv.      Preventing and reporting child abuse and neglect.

    1. Such training may take place on site while not supervising children. Such training hours shall increase according to the following:

                                                               i.      hired or promoted after June 1, 2006 – 16 hours

                                                             ii.      hired or promoted after June 1, 2007 – 20 hours

                                                           iii.      hired or promoted after June 1, 2008 – 24 hours

 

Salary and Benefits:  As assigned by the Principal and revised yearly.  All Diocesan sponsored benefits are available to this position.  Incumbent is provided a copy of the Diocesan Personnel Policies for Lay and Religious Employees (Called to Work in Harmony) from the Diocesan Office of Human Resources.
