Middle School Curriculum
Course Offerings
The Diocesan
Consensus Curriculum is followed for all courses offered at St. Mary's
School. Students are expected to master the learning strands for each
subject.
Foreign Language:
French is offered to students in grades 6 - 8.
Spanish is offered to students in grades 6 - 8.
Religion:
Grade 6 - Church History
Grade 7 - Creed (emphasis on Scripture)
Grade 8 - Morality (based on the Scriptures)
Math:
Grade 6 - Students are divided into two groups for sixth grade
math. One group works at a faster pace than the other group.
Grade 7 - Students are either in Math 7 or if found eligible may take
Pre- Algebra.
Grade 8 - Both Algebra and Pre-Algebra are offered. Students must meet
all advanced math criteria in order to take Algebra.
Science:
Grades 6 - 8 - General Science is taught at all grade levels
in Middle School according to the Consensus Curriculum.
Social Studies:
Grade 6 - Ancient World History
Grade 7 - American History: the Early Years (Jamestown until 1877)
Grade 8 - American History: The Modern Years (1877-Present)
Language Arts:
Grades 6 - 8 - Students focus on writing, grammar, reading, spelling,
vocabulary and literature including novel discussions.
Computer:
Grade 6 - Applications in the Real World
Grade 7 - Digital World
Grade 8 - Networking and Surfing the Web
Library:
Grades 6 - 8 - Newbery Award and Virginia Young Readers' books
are introduced; note-taking, research, card catalog, summarizing and mind-
mapping skills are reinforced and used in conjunction with class projects
Art:
Grades 6 - 8 - Principles of Design and Elements; Perspectives,
Value Studies in pencil and paint, study of color and its use in composition,
Art Vocabulary, Techniques and Methods of use for various mediums; Art
History; Multicultural Art Projects
Music:
Grade 6 - program music, absolute music, and instruments of the
orchestra, Beginning Recorder
Grade 7 - songs for the Christmas play, Beginning Recorder II (2nd semester)
Grade 8 - songs for the Christmas program, music history (2nd semester)
Physical Education:
Grade 6 - Basic competition theory, team playing skills, nutrition
and disease, position management
Grade 7 - Intermediate competitive theory, teamwork, nutrition and disease,
position management, individual achievement, negotiation
Grade 8 - Advanced game competitive theory, conflict, obstacle
